For the elderly, pensioners and the disabled
At the end of 2020, the City Council approved the Decree on the Co-Funding of the Pensioner Organisations’ Programmes in the Municipality of Velenje. The age structure of the population in Slovenia is changing and the share of people over 65 is growing rapidly. In the coming years, these trends will be even more pronounced, and Velenje is aware of this. By adopting the Decree, we have created even better possibilities and opportunities for a quality life and dignified ageing for all generations. We provide additional funds for the pensioners’ organisations programmes through a call for applications. The annual amount of available funds is determined by the annual budget of the Municipality of Velenje. The call is usually published in March and is intended for the pensioner organisations’ programmes which focus on the provision of information and advice to their members, voluntary work, active and quality leisure time, professional training of members, care for one’s own health, socialising programmes, intergenerational cooperation, and which also encourage cultural expression and creativity.
The municipality independently regulates and performs the tasks specified in Article 21 of the Local Self-Government Act as well as the tasks specified in municipal regulations pursuant to the law. In doing this, it abides by the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia and applicable legislation. The municipal charter also includes the promotion of these activities among our tasks. We pay special attention to elderly citizens in Velenje. For them, we develop programmes for secure old age and provide activities that contribute to their better accommodation and living conditions. We also strive for the elderly to have the best possible health options which we achieve through the co-funding of elderly-targeted programmes.
Velenje is an age-friendly city
The aim of the project is to improve the quality of life of the elderly citizens of our municipality. We want the elderly to be actively involved in projects in the local community and we enable them to do so. We have held several intergenerational forums, which were also attended by elderly residents.
Velenje is tailored to the needs of people with disabilities
With the aim of exercising human and citizen rights we systematically develop, encourage and implement activities and measures which contribute significantly to better quality of personal life for both disabled people and their families, and create opportunities for their social inclusion and active participation in the social life within the municipality.

Kamerat – free transportation for the elderly and mobility-impaired persons
Kamerat is a project which, through the use of an environmentally friendly electric vehicle and assistance provided by volunteers, enables better mobility for the elderly and mobility-impaired persons. The project enables those who do not have their own means of transport to go to the doctor, cemetery, supermarket, etc. more easily. Free transportation is intended for citizens aged 65 and over as well as for mobility-impaired persons and those citizens of Velenje who have no other means of transport available to them.
Basic principles of the project: intergenerational solidarity, promotion of an active life style, integration, cooperation, respect for nature, and support to volunteering.
Transports are carried out within the Šalek Valley on weekdays between 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM. No service is available at weekends and on holidays. All rides must be booked at least three days in advance to be able to coordinate the needs and wishes of as many users as possible.
